The shape without the substance

A review portal is a good way to lay out reading. The summary at the top tells you what a page is before you commit to it. A pros and cons block forces a claim to have two sides. A verdict line at the end makes the writer commit to something rather than trailing off. Those are all useful and none of them require a rating.

What a review portal also has is user generated content. Scores, star counts, vote totals, review numbers, names and avatars. That part is not borrowed here, because there is nothing behind it. This site has no users, runs no survey and collects nothing from anybody.

What a rating would actually be

Suppose there were four stars at the top of the addresses page. What would they mean. Nobody was asked. No sample was taken. No measurement was made. The number would be whatever the person building the page typed into a template.

That is not a rating. It is a graphic that resembles one, and the resemblance is the entire problem. A reader who sees four stars does not think somebody typed a four. They think a process happened. Borrowing the visual language of evidence without the evidence is a way of making a claim while keeping the option to say it was only decoration.

What the count badge does carry

There is a small orange badge in the sidebar next to the whole timeline, and there are counts against each phase. Those are real. They count pages that exist in this site, and you can verify any of them by following the link and counting what is there.

That is the test applied to every number on this site. If it can be checked by a reader, it stays. If it would need somebody to take our word for it, it does not appear. The spans on the phase pages sit in between, so each one is labelled as a judgement rather than presented as a measurement.

The same argument, applied outward

The reason this page matters beyond housekeeping is that the identical reasoning applies to everything you will read on a market. A seller score is produced by the system it lives in and measures activity inside that system. A listing figure is written by the party selling. A status indicator on a directory page is worth exactly what the process behind it is worth, and most of the time nobody tells you what that process is.

That is the habit this page is trying to establish. Ask what would have had to happen for the number to be true. If nothing had to happen, it is a decoration, and a decoration that looks like evidence is worse than a blank space.

What is missing here as a result

• No stars and no scores on anything, anywhere.
• No review counts and no vote totals. Nobody has voted on anything here.
• No testimonials and no author names attached to opinions. There is no panel of contributors.
• No uptime figure, no status light and no last checked date. This site probes nothing, so it has nothing to report.
• No structured data claiming a rating. The markup on these pages contains no rating of any kind, because there is nothing real to put in it.

Questions that come up here

Why use a review portal layout at all then?

Because the furniture is good. A summary card, a two sided block and a verdict line all make writing more honest rather than less. It is the fabricated numbers that are the problem, not the shape.

Are the time spans on the phase pages measurements?

No, and each one says so. They are judgements about the shape of a common experience, given as ranges with the reasoning attached rather than as figures.
