What actually happens here
A text area appears with a note asking for delivery details, usually with a line telling you to encrypt them. You type an address into it. It is the least technical box on the page and the most consequential.
There is no validation. No postcode check, no autocomplete, no confirmation step that reads it back to you. Whatever you type is what gets used, and a small error in it produces a parcel that goes to the wrong place with no way to intervene.
What belongs in it
- A complete, correctly formatted address in the format the destination postal service expects. Nothing clever.
- A name that will be accepted at that address. Post that arrives for a name nobody there recognises attracts attention it does not need.
- Nothing else. No note about the order, no reference to the listing, no account name, no message. The field is for delivery details and anything extra travels with them for no benefit.
Read it back once before you do anything else with it. This is the last moment at which an error is free, and after the next step it will be inside an encrypted block that you cannot easily reread.
What does not belong
- An address that will not accept post reliably. A clever destination that nobody checks is worse than a boring one that works.
- Anything identifying from elsewhere. A phone number, an email, a reference from another service. None of it is needed and all of it links things that were separate.
- A plain text version left anywhere. Once encrypted, remove the plain version from wherever you drafted it, including any note application you used to compose it.
- It works. The postal system is unforgiving of creativity and forgiving of nothing else.
- It gives whoever handles it no reason to look twice.
- It is one field, done once, with no ongoing management.
- It is real information about a real place, which is exactly what it sounds like.
- Once sent, it exists wherever the recipient keeps it, and that is outside your control entirely.
- It cannot be corrected after confirmation.
The stall is hesitation, and it is the most reasonable hesitation in the run. This is the point where the abstraction ends and something real gets typed. People sit on it for several minutes.
The productive version of that hesitation is checking the format and rereading it. The unproductive version is inventing a partial or altered address in the hope that it still arrives, which reliably produces a parcel that does not.
The third failure is drafting it in a note application and leaving the draft there. The encrypted version is safe and the draft is not, and the draft is the copy that syncs.
The hesitation is not counted in that and it can add several minutes. It is worth sitting with rather than rushing, because this is the field with no correction step.
Then encrypt it
The text you have just written is currently plain, in a form, on a page. It should not be submitted in that state. Encrypting it means only the recipient can read it, and it is the difference between details that exist in one place and details that exist wherever this system stores what you typed.
That step is the next page, and it is the one that stops first sessions. If you are not ready for it, stop here. The order is not placed and nothing has been committed.
